The course comprises of 5 modules which cover the major aspects of disaster management namely; disaster risk reduction frameworks including conceptual, policy and legal frameworks at international and national levels; disaster risk analysis; DRR strategies for mainstreaming into development programming; and participatory rural appraisal tools for disaster risk assessment and planning.

Module 1: Introduction and definition of key terms

Module 2: DRR frameworks;

· Pressure and Release Model,

· International Strategy for Disaster Reduction DRR Framework,

· Sustainable Development Goals,

· Hyogo Framework of Action,

· Sendai Framework, and

· Resilience Framework.

Module 3: Disaster Risk Analysis;

· Hazard assessment,

· Vulnerability assessment,

· Capacity/ manageability assessment,

· Risk analysis and mapping.

Module 4: DRR Strategies;

· Early warning systems,

· Climate change adaptation,

· Protection of critical facilities and the role of engineering and building codes in construction,

· Networking and partnerships

Module 5: Participatory Rural Appraisal Tools for Disaster Risk Analysis and Planning

· Population and resource mapping

· Hazard force field/ Problem tree analysis

· Hazard mapping and ranking

· Hazard venn diagram

· Historical story telling of hazards and indigenous knowledge

· Gender analysis

· Stakeholder analysis

· Community vulnerability and capacity assessment matrices

Duration

The course duration is flexible depending on the preference of the participant and it ranges from one week to 6 weeks.

Modality

Lectures will be done online and modules will be sent via email. Assessment exercises will be sent after every module and should be taken before moving to the next module.
