Mainstreaming protection - essential skills for aid workers
Responding to the needs of those affected by disasters or armed conflict is not just about providing assistance but also providing protection based on the humanitarian imperative to 'do no harm' (Sphere 2011).
"Australia supports protection in preparedness for, response to and recovery from humanitarian crises by funding and advocating for: a) protection to be mainstreamed into humanitarian action."

Who is this course for?
International Humanitarian Protection Training (IHPT) is a must for all humanitarian aid workers, program and policy officers, case workers and others working with people who are affected by disaster or armed conflict in international settings.
What will you learn?
This two day course will develop your understanding and competencies for applying protection principles to your particular role in a humanitarian response.
We will engage you in experiential learning through case studies, group exercises and a short simulation, to help you learn:
- to define and describe protection and its role in the humanitarian context
- how to mainstream protection principles into your emergency programming
- to better understand sexual exploitation and abuse, gender-based violence and child protection
- to respond safely and ethically to incidences of International Humanitarian Law violations and human rights abuses, within your role
Our facilitators
IHPT is co-facilitated by the Australian Red Cross and Directors of Humanitarian Advisory Group (HAG) - practitioners and authors of the "Minimum Inter-Agency Standards for Mainstreaming Protection" (2012).
Course locations
IHPT is run several times a year in Sydney and Melbourne.
Each course runs two full days and is non-residential. Participants make their own accommodation and transport arrangements. All course rates include training materials, lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
